Clarification of page numbers for Tuesday's Assignment

(And sorry for any confusion)

For Tuesday, 1/24

What to Read and Annotate (30 min)

• “Annotating and Taking Notes” (I&C – Ideas and Communication Packet 33 )
• Introductory material on “Learning Power” (Rereading America Introduction to Chapter #2:133-140)
• Assignment Sheet Essay #1 (I&C 32 )

What to Write (2.5 hrs)

• (HW #1) Reminder: number all homework Read “Introduction to Writing” (I&C 6 ) Write about two things concerning writing or reading from the reading that surprised/interested/made you nod your head in agreement (remember, your focus is on responding to the readings, not writing or reading in general). Explain why these things surprised (etc.) you.
• (HW #2-3) For the readings below, annotate and complete a “Writer’s Notes” (I&C 35 ) for each. Review “Engaging the Text” questions at end of essay and be prepared to answer them in class.

Remember when taking notes that any words from the source must be in quotation marks and cited with an author and page number, and that summaries or paraphrases also need to be cited.

• (HW#2) Moore, Michael. “Idiot Nation” (Rereading America 153-172)
• (HW#3) Gatto, John Taylor. “The Seven-Lesson Schoolteacher” (Rereading America 173-180) note: watch for sarcasm and irony in this essay.
• Check your Ocean Cruiser account and be sure you can access and print the essay due next week. If not, check with me after class.
