Idealism
A philosphocial tenant which argues that we make reality in our minds. Thus, when we are not using it, the table we eat our turkey sandwich on disappears. To use a hoary riddle as another example, for an idealist, that tree that perpetually falls in the woods with no one around wouldn't make any noise because without a person there, the tree -- or even the woods -- don't exist. On one level, this is prepostorous; yet on another level, it does draw one up short. We do, indeed, order the reality around us as we see fit. Just look at something as simple as taste in clothing. If there was really only one reality, wouldn't everyone dress the same?
