Computer Tips for MLA Format

Follow the suggestions below to properly format your essay before handing in the final draft. The reason to pay attention to these details? You're working on following detailed written instructions, a skill (note I wrote "skill," not something that comes automatically), a crucial part of cognitive development, and getting good grades -- and keeping the paycheck coming.

How to set up MLA Header in Word 2007+
1. Click "Insert " from top of page
2. Click a) page number, b) top of page, and c) Plain number 3
3. Move cursor all the way to the left, a) type last name, and b) hit the space key
4. To exit, move cursor out of header box onto the page itself and double click

To double space lines, highlight the text you want to doublespace and then press ctrl+2. To convert back to single space, hightlight text and press ctrl+1.

How to Add a Works Cited Page in Microsoft Word
Follow the few steps below to attach a Works Cited page to your document.

  1. Scroll or page down to the end of your last paragraph
  2. Hold down the "Ctrl" key (on bottom of keyboard near the space bar) and press the "Enter" key once
    You've just created a "hard page break" that will keep your Works Cited page separate from the rest of your essay.
  3. Four steps in one: a) hold down the "Ctrl" key; b) press the letter "E" once (The cursor should now be at the middle of your screen); c) type Works Cited (Note: do not bold or underline it); and d) press the "Enter" key
  4. Press the "Back Space" key once and begin adding your Works Cited entries

To Indent Works Cited Entries In Word
1. Type out complete entry without tabs
2. Move cursor to beginning of entry (i.e. author's last name) and press ctrl+t
3. Double-space entry
